Art movements are born as a cultural response to a bigger social-political-technological environment. The creators involved in this process are living those same societal effects, even if they don’t know each other. Aesthetic is defined as, “a set of principles underlying the work of a particular artist or artistic movement.”

Art can be demanding

“All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid is evaporated into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses, his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind.

CYBERPUNK

“High tech. Low life.”

What is cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction that features advanced science and technology in an urban, dystopian future. On one side you have powerful mega-corporations and private security forces, and on the other you have the dark and gritty underworld of illegal trade, gangs, drugs, and vice. In between all of this is politics, corruption, and social upheaval.

It is a sensibility or belief that a few outsiders, armed with their own individuality and technological capability, can fend off the tendencies of traditional institutions to use technology to control society.

“The great thing about cyberpunk is that it is recognizably our world, only in the future,”

Outrun is an 80s retro futuristic style, that pushes tech forward whilst being firmly rooted in the past.

Vaporwave

Vaporwave is a microgenre of electronic music, visual art style, internet meme emerged in 2010

It’s remix culture centered on the bold geometric shapes, glitch art graphics and clip art (statues) of the 1980s. It’s neon, especially pink, purple and aqua. But it is these things deconstructed; the music is slowed down, distorted, so the refrains from an earlier, more innocent time have a haunting effect.

MEMPHIS DESIGN — Colorful, kitsch and garish

The Memphis Group was a collaborative design group founded by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass, with its roots in furniture design. They were a statement; a protest against the neutral, understated and functional.

Simple geometric shapes; flat colours combined in bold, contrasting palettes; stylized graphic patterns defined by black-and-white stripes and abstract squiggles — these are the ingredients of Memphis-inspired design, fueled by influences from earlier movements such as Pop Art and Art Deco
